- Breakbulk: Necessary for extremely large, heavy, or irregularly shaped crates. It involves securing each crate individually onto a vessel's deck. Higher costs and more handling.
Determining the Right Shipping Type
Accurate crate dimensions and weight are crucial. An assessment by a freight forwarder ensures safe and cost-effective transportation.
Packaging Requirements
Crates must be robustly constructed using high-quality materials to withstand the rigours of shipping. Use pressure-treated lumber or equivalent for strength and moisture resistance. Internal bracing is essential to prevent shifting during transit. Adequate padding (e.g., bubble wrap, foam) should protect equipment from impact. Clear, durable labelling is crucial, including "Fragile," "Handle with Care," weight, dimensions, and handling instructions. Use weatherproof materials and seals to protect against moisture.
Documentation
Necessary documentation includes a commercial invoice, a packing list detailing crate contents and dimensions, a certificate of origin, and an export license if the destination country requires it. Ensure all documentation is accurate and complete.

Cargo insurance is crucial to protect against loss or damage during transit. Various coverage options are available, including Institute Cargo Clauses (ICC) A, B, and C, offering different levels of protection.
