Shipping Heavy-Duty Winches

Depending on their size and weight, heavy-duty winches are typically shipped as FCL (Full Container Load) or OOG (Out of Gauge) cargo.

FCL (Full Container Load)

Suppose the winches are relatively small and lightweight enough to fit within a standard shipping container (20ft or 40ft), and their weight doesn't exceed the container's capacity (typically 26,500kg for 20ft and 28,500kg for 40ft). In that case, FCL is the most efficient method. They would be secured within the container using appropriate lashing and dunnage to prevent movement during transit.

Weight Limit: Generally under 26,500kg for a 20ft container and under 28,500 kilograms for a 40ft container. Specific dimensions depend on the container type and winch size.

OOG (Out of Gauge)

If the winches are oversized or overweight for a standard container (exceeding the weight or dimension limits above), they'll be classified as OOG. This requires specialized handling and potentially Breakbulk shipment. They might be secured on a flat rack container or shipped as individual units on a vessel's deck. Proper securing and bracing are crucial due to their weight and potential for shifting.

Breakbulk shipment is less likely unless the winches are exceptionally large or heavy and don't fit any standard container configuration. FCL or OOG are generally preferred for their efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Cost Considerations

FCL shipping is generally less expensive than OOG shipping. However, OOG shipments incur additional costs for specialised handling, oversized cargo fees, and potentially higher insurance premiums. The overall price is influenced by factors such as distance, fuel surcharges, insurance, and the specific requirements of the shipment.
