Shipping Fiber Distribution Units (FDUs)

Shipping FDUs From & To the UK

Fiber Distribution Units (FDUs) are typically shipped as FCL (Full Container Load). They are relatively small and easily palletized, fitting neatly within a standard 20' or 40' dry container.

Shipping Methods:

  • FCL (Full Container Load): Ideal for most FDU shipments. Cost-effective for larger quantities.
  • OOG (Out of Gauge) Cargo: Used for unusually large or heavy FDUs. Requires special handling and may necessitate a dedicated container or Breakbulk shipment.
  • Breakbulk: Only necessary for exceptionally large FDUs that cannot fit in a container, or if the shipment volume doesn't justify a full container. More expensive and less efficient than FCL.

Packaging Guidelines:

Proper packaging is crucial to prevent damage during transit. Shipping International recommends the following guidelines:

  • Palletization: Securely fasten each FDU to a sturdy pallet using appropriate straps or banding.
  • Protection: Wrap each FDU individually in protective materials such as bubble wrap or foam padding. Use corner protectors to safeguard vulnerable edges and corners.
  • Shrink Wrapping: Encase the entire pallet in shrink wrap to provide additional protection against moisture and dust.
  • Labeling: Clearly label each pallet with the shipment details, including the consignee's address, contact information, and handling instructions (e.g., "Fragile," "Handle with Care").

Export/Import Documentation:

Ensure you have the following documentation for international shipments:

  • Commercial Invoice: Details the goods being shipped, their value, and the buyer and seller information.
  • Packing List: Lists the contents of each package, including quantity, weight, and dimensions.
  • Certificate of Origin: Verifies the country of origin of the goods.
  • Bill of Lading (B/L): Acts as a contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier.
  • Other Permits/Licenses: May be required depending on the specific goods and destination country.

Incoterms Explanation:

Incoterms define the responsibilities and costs of the buyer and seller in international trade. Common Incoterms include:

  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): The seller bears all costs and risks associated with delivering the goods to the named place of destination.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): The seller pays for the cost of the goods, insurance, and freight to the named port of destination. The buyer is responsible for costs and risks from that point onward.
  • FOB (Free on Board): The seller's responsibility ends once the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the named port of shipment. The buyer is responsible for all subsequent costs and risks.

Choosing the right Incoterm is crucial for managing costs and responsibilities. Information on Incoterms is available from Shipping International.
